Possible FDA Approval of Moderna’s mRNA Flu Shot and Its Implications
Moderna awaits an important decision from the FDA regarding its mRNA-based flu vaccine. This development holds significant implications for mRNA research. Health Secretary Robert F. Moderna’s president, Stephen Hoge, encountered a setback earlier this year. During a visit to a manufacturing site, he learned from Charbel Haber, the head of regulatory affairs, that the FDA wouldn’t review the company’s application for its mRNA flu shot. This decision contradicted previous signals from the FDA that the application would be reviewed. The pharmaceutical industry expressed concern over this unexpected rejection.
“Charbel came up to me and just had a very nervous look on his face,” Hoge recalls, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Following protests from Moderna, the FDA agreed to review the application, provided Moderna includes a confirmatory study if the vaccine reaches the market. An advisory panel later recommended the approval of the vaccine. The FDA faces a deadline to make a final decision. If approved, this would be the first mRNA flu vaccine available commercially.
The initial rejection by the FDA has affected investor confidence. Rena Conti from Boston University notes that the U.S. market is financially crucial for vaccine developers, reinforcing the need for consistent regulatory processes. The Department of Health and Human Services recently canceled nearly $500 million in mRNA research funding, further complicating the situation.

Moderna is cautious in its mRNA research plans amidst uncertain regulatory conditions. Jeff Coller from Johns Hopkins University notes that smaller biotech companies face increased challenges due to the FDA’s actions and HHS funding cuts.
The impact extends to patients, like Janusz Racz, a retired computer scientist in London. Diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer, he participated in a clinical trial for an mRNA vaccine developed by BioNTech, which has successfully treated his cancer. He believes in the potential of mRNA technology and has written to Kennedy advocating for continued support, underscoring its importance in providing hope to patients worldwide.
