The Colorado Buffaloes are preparing for their season opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but a potential conflict might affect head coach Deion Sanders’ availability for the game. With the opener a little over two weeks away, legal obligations could interfere with Sanders’ schedule.
Testimony Requirement
Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reported that Sanders might need to testify in a bankruptcy case involving his son, Shilo Sanders. The hearing is scheduled from August 31 to September 4. This timing conflicts with the Buffaloes’ preparations for their game on September 3 against Georgia Tech.
The judge noted the conflict with Colorado’s season opener and said he wouldn’t be surprised if Deion Sanders tried to fight the subpoena to testify at the trial,
notes Schrotenboer. The team could potentially proceed without Sanders during its Georgia Tech preparations.
Possible Video Testimony
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio suggests Sanders might avoid missing time if he can provide a video testimony. If either or both sides aren’t willing to work together…Deion may have to take a break from practices and meetings to show up to court in Denver,
Florio wrote, indicating the challenges if no agreement is reached.
The University of Colorado has yet to comment on the situation, despite inquiries from multiple media outlets.
Importance of Deion’s Presence
Having Sanders on the sideline for the Georgia Tech game is crucial. The Buffaloes need a strong start, having ended last season with a 3-9 record. This was their first season without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, two key players.
Sanders is under pressure to lead the team to better records following a five-year, $54 million contract extension he signed in March. His record at Colorado stands at 16-21, and he has a 9-18 record against Big 12 competition. He has led the team to one bowl appearance, the 2024 Alamo Bowl, which they lost 36-14 to BYU.
Critics argue Deion’s coaching effectiveness hinges on key players like his son and Travis Hunter. Without them, his record drops to 7-12, compared to 36-15 when they are part of the team.
