Last month, a U.S. Navy destroyer faced a daunting challenge while on duty in the South China Sea. The ship, a guided-missile destroyer, experienced a total power failure, impacting the daily lives of the sailors aboard.
The crew faced significant hardships. For four days, they lacked access to drinkable water, meals, functional toilets, and air conditioning. These challenges arose due to the ship’s heavy use, especially under the Trump administration’s operations. This prolonged period without basic amenities underscored the difficulties service members often endure while deployed.
The USS Benfold, the vessel in question, made its presence known in various international ports, such as when it arrived in Qingdao, China, back in 2016. The recent power loss highlights ongoing logistical challenges within the fleet, particularly as these ships see increased deployment.
