On Thursday, President Donald Trump urged Minnesotans to take action against Somali immigrants in their state. His statement followed federal charges against a Somali American accused of planning a terror attack on the Mall of America.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Somali immigrants were “taking over” the state, claiming there was “violence, murder, and mayhem all over the state.” He encouraged residents to “fight back.” Trump criticized Democratic Governor Tim Walz, calling him an “incompetent thief” who neglects the state’s needs. The president accused Walz of planning to “steal” and “lead a quiet life,” urging locals to resist what Somali immigrants are “doing.”
These remarks were made after the FBI and Department of Justice announced the arrest of 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, an American citizen with Somali roots. Authorities allege Mohamud attempted to join a Foreign Terrorist Organization in Somalia to execute an attack in Minnesota, following nearly two years of online discussions with a source.
President Trump has consistently criticized Governor Walz for handling alleged fraud involving the Somali community in Minnesota. Notably, an extensive immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul in late 2025 resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents.
Newsweek has reached out to the White House for further details on Trump’s comments. Contact has also been made with Governor Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Minnesota’s Democratic Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar for responses.
