Primaries Across the U.S. Highlight Key Contests and Endorsements

The Democratic primary for governor in Wisconsin remains extremely close as a significant portion of undecided voters appeared to shift support to David Crowley in the final days. Francesca Hong leads with 40% of the vote, consistent with the Marquette Law School poll conducted from July 22-27. That poll showed 38% support for Hong, while 34% of voters were undecided and only 7% supported Crowley. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes dropped out of the race on July 30, and Crowley relaunched his campaign with Gov. Tony Evers’ endorsement. As a result, Hong faced intense scrutiny over past statements and policy positions.

In Minnesota, Republican Lisa Demuth defeated the Trump-backed candidate Mike Lindell in the gubernatorial primary, according to NBC News projections. Demuth will contest against Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar in the general election. In other races, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan won the Democratic Senate primary in Minnesota, which strengthens the progressive wing of her party.

In Vermont, Amanda Janoo has won the Democratic primary for governor and will face Republican Gov. Phil Scott in the general election. In Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, Michael Alfonso, endorsed by Trump, won the Republican primary.

Meanwhile, NBC News projections show Rebecca Cooke winning the Democratic primary in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, setting up a rematch with Republican Derrick Van Orden in November.

On the Republican side, Michele Tafoya secured the Republican Senate primary nomination in Minnesota. In Connecticut, former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated incumbent John Larson in the Democratic primary for the 1st Congressional District.

In Alabama, Rhett Marques, backed by Trump, won the Republican special primary for the 2nd Congressional District. In South Carolina, Rep. Ralph Norman has advanced to a GOP Senate primary runoff against appointed Sen. Darline Graham.

Trump’s endorsement remains influential, despite notable losses in Minnesota, Iowa, and Georgia. Over 200 Trump-backed candidates have won primaries this year. Today’s results highlight the ongoing divide in the Democratic Party between progressives and the establishment, and the varied influence of Trump’s endorsement in Republican primaries.
