Pastor Lorenzo Sewell from Detroit expressed concerns to Fox News Digital about the strategies employed by progressive politicians. Sewell believes they aim to virtue-signal and appeal to Christians since they form the largest religious voting bloc in the U.S.
Christian Electorate’s Influence
“It’s the largest voting bloc in America,” Sewell stated. He emphasized that the nation’s founders relied on Christian values, making the U.S. a nation of benevolence. Sewell noted America’s historical protection of Israel and the global spread of Christianity over the past 250 years.
Progressive Candidates and Their Faith
Three progressive Democrats—Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, former Michigan health official Abdul El-Sayed, and Texas state Rep. James Talarico—are incorporating their faith into their U.S. Senate campaigns. They challenge Democratic norms while integrating religious elements in appeals to voters.
Talarico’s Scriptural Defense
James Talarico, a Texas lawmaker with theological training, often references biblical scriptures to support progressive policies. Talarico argues that Jesus prioritized aiding the needy above engaging in cultural conflicts. In Hays County, he envisioned a Democratic Party free from big money influences, addressing essential needs like housing, healthcare, and education.
In his sermons, Talarico questions current systems that favor the wealthy over the poor, aligning them with biblical perspectives.
Nixon’s Rhetoric of Radicalism
At Saint Paul AME Church in Jacksonville, Florida, Angie Nixon equated her political stances with those of Jesus, highlighting her so-called extremist image. She is competing against incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody.
El-Sayed’s Interfaith Approach
Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim candidate from Michigan, draws parallels between Islamic and Christian teachings. He mentions that Jesus’s actions were seen as radical in his time, during an appearance on the “Progressive Christians Podcast.” El-Sayed is running against former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers.
Sewell’s Critique of Progressive Agendas
Pastor Sewell maintains that such strategies are political maneuvers to capture Christian support. He questions their real agenda for the church, contrasting with Donald Trump’s recognition of church interests. Sewell plans to speak at the upcoming Republican National Convention, highlighting Trump’s acknowledgment of Christian principles.
