Progressives Face Challenging Path in Upcoming Elections
Progressives have demonstrated success in Democratic primaries, but the true test awaits in the upcoming November midterms. Voters across the country will decide close races in the Senate, House, and several governorships.
El-Sayed’s Nomination and Upcoming Battle
Abdul El-Sayed, supported by progressive figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat. He narrowly defeated Representative Haley Stevens, highlighting the contest between progressive and moderate Democrats. El-Sayed will face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in November, providing progressives a significant opportunity to convert primary wins into general election success.
Recent progressive victories include William Lawrence and Donavan McKinney in Michigan House primaries, Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, and Analilia Mejía in New Jersey. Each candidate faces different challenges in November. Some, like El-Sayed and Lawrence, must compete in tightly contested regions.
John Geer, a political science professor at Vanderbilt University, noted that although progressives demonstrated strength, turning that into November victories requires appealing to both independents and discontented Republicans.
In contrast, former Representative Cori Bush lost to Missouri Representative Wesley Bell, and moderate Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican John Braun advanced over progressive Brent Hennrich in Washington’s primary.
Can Progressives Broaden Their Appeal?
The November elections will reveal if progressive candidates can extend their reach beyond the party base in competitive races or if moderates offer a better chance against Republicans.
Michigan’s Critical Senate Race
El-Sayed needs to unite Democrats after a divisive primary and attract independents in a state Trump carried in 2024. Despite substantial outside spending against him, Stevens has pledged her support for El-Sayed.
The 2024 results in Michigan demonstrate the evenly divided political landscape. Trump won the state, while Democratic Representative Elissa Slotkin defeated Rogers. Current polling reflects a tight race with Rogers slightly leading. An EPIC-MRA/MIRS poll showed Rogers at 46 percent and El-Sayed at 43 percent, with a margin of error of 4 percent.
El-Sayed’s success hinges on his campaign approach. Focusing on affordability and corruption can improve his chances, according to expert Greer.
Other Progressive Contests
Several progressive candidates face tough challenges in November. Lawrence competes against Republican Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. The Cook Political Report marks this seat as a prime Democratic target.
McKinney and Rabb run in districts with recent Democratic strengths. McKinney won over Representative Shri Thanedar, who secured 68.7 percent in 2024. Rabb secured Pennsylvania’s 3rd District Democratic nomination. Mejía already triumphed in New Jersey’s 11th District special election this April.
Future primaries could expand the list of progressive statewide candidates. Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and Wisconsin Representative Francesca Hong pursue nominations for higher offices.
These upcoming campaigns, particularly El-Sayed’s and Lawrence’s, stand as key indicators of whether progressives can extend their influence beyond predominately Democratic areas.
