Prosecutors Dismiss Vandalism Charges Against Former Olympian

Former Olympian David Hearn addressed reporters and protestors at Moultrie Courthouse in Washington, DC, after his arraignment on July 9, 2026. The charges related to vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool have been dismissed by federal prosecutors. Authorities concluded that the damage was due to a flawed installation rather than vandalism.

Hearn, at 67 years old, had previously pleaded not guilty. He was accused of causing damage exceeding $1,000. He asserted his actions were merely out of curiosity, and he had only touched the water.

Prosecutors initially alleged Hearn deliberately damaged the reflecting pool, ripping a sealant piece after a $14 million renovation. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro described it as an intentional act witnessed by National Park Service members.

However, recent developments changed this narrative. The U.S. Attorney’s Office acknowledged they relied on preliminary information from the Department of the Interior and U.S. Park Police. New documents suggested the damage stemmed from flawed contractor work by Atlantic Industrial Coatings. The rush to complete renovations before the America 250 celebration around July 4, 2026, was also cited.
