Protests and Unrest at Newark’s Delaney Hall Protest

For nearly a week, the area outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark has witnessed escalating confrontations. Demonstrators have frequently clashed with federal agents who have used pepper balls and spray to disperse the growing protests. The demonstrations, sparked by dissatisfaction with conditions inside the facility, were captured in both witness reports and video footage.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey aimed to diffuse tensions by replacing federal agents with state police. Her move came from a fear that Newark might experience chaos similar to that in Minneapolis, where federal officers fatally shot two people during protests over immigration. Despite the changes, violent encounters have persisted. Demonstrators have pushed against barriers, set fires, and faced off against state troopers both on foot and horseback.

These intense clashes pose significant challenges for police departments nationwide. In cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and New York, local authorities have prohibited police from assisting federal officials with civil immigration enforcement. However, police still need to manage public order by preventing trespassing, blocking of traffic, or vandalism. In trying to maintain peace, police forces can often appear complicit with federal agents.

This complex situation has ensnared New Jersey’s officials. Earlier this week, after taking charge of security outside Delaney Hall, Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark decided to reduce the city’s response to the ongoing unrest.

The protests that have stretched close to two weeks outside Delaney Hall began a year ago after the facility resumed operations as a 1,000-bed detention center. Managed by GEO Group, a prominent private prison company, the center has been the focus of largely peaceful demonstrations over the past five months.
