Public Bathrooms and Inequality: The Untold Connections
Public Bathrooms: A Historical Perspective
Temple University professor Bryant Simon asserts that public restrooms have played significant roles in historical movements. His book, “For Customers Only: Public Bathrooms and the Making of American Inequality,” explores these connections.
Public bathrooms have been linked to civil rights and farm labor movements. They have also been central in debates over sexual orientation and gender identity.
Long Beach’s Historical Battle
Long Beach provides a historical example of how public bathrooms were used in conflicts over homosexuality more than a century ago. The city launched a campaign against homosexuality with public restrooms as a focal point.
In 1914, an undercover operation in Long Beach led to the arrest of 31 men for social vagrancy. This operation showcased the social stigma associated with public restrooms, sparking widespread homophobia in the city.
Vice Patrols and Sting Operations
Two failed actors, B.C. Brown and H.W. Warren, were hired as vice officers to execute a “purity campaign.” They targeted men in public restrooms, leading to numerous arrests. Each arrest was incentivized, offering officers financial gain.
These arrests led to significant fines for those accused, who faced eviction, job loss, and social ostracism. Tragically, this resulted in extreme actions, such as the suicide of Scottish immigrant Josh Lamb.
Gay Rights Movement’s Response
In the late 1960s, the gay rights movement in Long Beach countered police entrapment operations. Activists sought equal rights and aimed to close public restrooms at night to discourage sexual encounters.
Despite efforts by activists and police, public restroom encounters gradually gave way to other arenas, like bars and shows.
