Punch the Monkey Celebrates First Birthday with Worldwide Fan Support

In Ichikawa, Japan, Punch, an orphaned monkey that gained worldwide admiration for his attachment to an orangutan plushie, celebrates his first birthday with messages from fans. Abandoned by his mother a year ago due to presumed exhaustion, Punch was nurtured by zookeepers who gave him a toy to aid his gripping ability, crucial for young macaques.

Today, Punch mingles with other monkeys at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden, no longer distinguishing himself with the plushie. Despite blending in, he still draws large crowds, having received around 2,500 birthday cards from fans both within Japan and abroad, according to Takashi Yasunaga, the zoo director. These greetings are displayed at an indoor exhibit dedicated to Punch’s past year, featuring video highlights of his journey.

“As Punch struggled daily, his two keepers did all they could while other staff supported him,” Yasunaga recalled of the past year, noting the intense heat when Punch was born.

After six months of special care, Punch was introduced to the zoo’s monkey enclosure, joining approximately 50 other monkeys, which contributed to his growing fame. In February, the zoo’s social media post showing Punch with his plushie became viral, attracting tens of thousands of visitors, including half from overseas. When other monkeys pushed Punch away, he sought comfort with his toy, inspiring fans who created a #HangInTherePunch social media campaign.

Kumi Ishizawa, visiting from Kobe, discovered Punch on social media earlier this year. Determined to see him despite her health challenges, Ishizawa says, “He moved me… I told myself I would recover and visit Punch. Here I am, and I’m thrilled to see him in person.”

Yeye Lights, who became a fan after her daughter told her about Punch, now holds an annual zoo pass. “I have a cake for Punch-kun and am celebrating with friends,” she shared, grateful to the caretakers for their dedication.
