Rabid Bat Found in California Sparks Health Warning
A rabid bat discovered near a neighborhood in California has led health officials to advise residents to steer clear of wildlife and seek medical help if they suspect exposure. The incident occurred on May 26, when a bat was located near Palo Verde Common in South Fremont, accessible to pedestrians and animals, according to the Fremont Police Department.
On Thursday, Alameda County Vector Control confirmed the bat tested positive for rabies. The agency is currently investigating, but no human or animal exposures have been reported so far.
WWE official Charles Robinson attributed a hospital visit to a bat bite.
This situation prompted authorities to alert local residents about the risks related to rabies. According to a police news release, rabies is a deadly virus affecting the brain and nervous system. Vaccination can prevent the disease if administered promptly after exposure.
Authorities urged anyone who may have touched or been bitten by the bat to contact the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease Program at 510-267-3250 and seek immediate medical care. They also cautioned residents against interacting with bats and other rabies carriers like skunks, foxes, coyotes, and raccoons.
The police noted that dogs and cats without rabies vaccinations are at a higher risk of contracting and spreading the virus. People are advised not to approach sick or dead animals and to report unusual animal behavior to local animal services or the public health department.
Officials stressed the importance of keeping pets up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. They also suggested confining pets within the property and eliminating outdoor food sources attractive to wild animals.
Fox News Digital is seeking further details from the Fremont Police Department regarding this issue.
