Rabies Warnings Issued in Multiple States After Infected Animals Detected
Health officials in several states have raised alarms about rabies after discovering infected animals including bats, raccoons, foxes, goats, and a pet dog. These findings increase concerns about potential exposure for people and pets. Notable increases in rabies cases have been reported in Idaho and Texas.
Rabies Outbreaks in Idaho and Texas
In Idaho, authorities have reported 24 rabid bats this year, surpassing numbers from the past three years. Calls about potential bat exposures have more than doubled compared to last year. Meanwhile, in San Antonio and Bexar County, Texas, officials reported 22 rabies cases in wild animals in June and July. This is a significant rise from previous years and includes the first case in a pet dog in over a decade.
Targeted Alerts and Responses
Other states are dealing with targeted rabies warnings. North Carolina officials are tracing individuals who may have been exposed to infected baby goats from a mobile petting zoo. Florida issued a 60-day alert in Brevard County after confirming a rabid raccoon. Confirmed rabies cases have also occurred in Alabama, California, Maryland, and Michigan.
Rabies spreads via bites or scratches from infected mammals, or through exposure to their saliva via broken skin, eyes, or mouth. The disease is fatal if untreated before symptoms appear.
Idaho Reports Rise in Rabid Bats
A rabid bat was confirmed on July 14 in Blaine County, marking the first confirmed case in south-central Idaho this year. The increase in encounters is unclear, but Idaho’s expanding population and wildfire smoke may be influencing factors. It’s recommended not to touch bats with bare hands. Contact local health authorities if exposed to a bat.
Rabies Case in Texas Dog
A rabies alert in San Antonio came after a pet dog encountered a skunk. The dog exhibited rabies symptoms in August, leading to confirmed diagnosis and treatment offers for potential exposures. Pet owners are advised to keep animals vaccinated and report wildlife encounters.
Rabid Animals Found in Alabama
A fox tested positive for rabies in Autauga County. No human exposure occurred, but two dogs received rabies boosters. It followed a raccoon case in Montgomery. Alabama mandates rabies vaccinations for pets and suggests confining them to avoid risk.
Concern Over Rabid Goats in North Carolina
North Carolina is investigating possible exposures associated with rabid goats from a mobile petting zoo. Infected goats appeared at public events and private gatherings from late July to late August. People in contact with these goats should consult local health departments.
Florida Rabies Alert in Brevard County
A confirmed rabid raccoon led to a 60-day alert in Brevard County. The health department advises avoiding wild animals and secured pet food. Ensuring pets are vaccinated and restricted is crucial to preventing exposure.
Maryland Issues Alerts Following Rabid Animal Cases
Maryland’s Anne Arundel County announced alerts as a raccoon and a bat tested positive. Similar situations unfolded in Harford County, prompting officials to urge residents to check for any animal contact.
Rabid Bat Discovery in Michigan
The Saginaw County Health Department confirmed a bat with rabies. Guidance encourages leaving bats undisturbed if inside homes and facilitating their exit without direct contact.
Yosemite Park Warns of Rabid Bats
Yosemite National Park reported a rabid bat found in May. No incidents of direct contact were recorded, but visitors are advised to report any past bat encounters. Regular testing monitors the bat populations for rabies.
