Rain Delay at U.S. Open Highlights Technical Challenges
On Sunday night at the U.S. Open, a malfunctioning roof sensor at Louis Armstrong Stadium led to rain falling on the court. This extended the delay and influenced concession sales, particularly of the Honey Deuce cocktail.
The evening session, which kicked off after a warm and humid day, featured two matches each at Armstrong and Arthur Ashe Stadium. Elina Svitolina, the No. 9 seed, quickly won her match against Solana Sierra 6-1, 6-2. This set up an earlier-than-expected start for the subsequent match between No. 15 seed Alexander Bublik and American J.J. Wolf.
However, rain began 20 minutes after Svitolina’s victory. Play was suspended on external courts, but the retractable roofs at Armstrong and Ashe were intended to shield the players, Bublik and Wolf, as well as Novak Djokovic and Mariano Navone.
“Armstrong’s roof had a mechanical issue,” explained a USTA spokesperson. Rain continued to fall onto the court as the roof remained open. Closing the roof and court drying added about 90 minutes to the delay.
Fans cheered when the roof finally closed. As the court dried, fans dispersed from long concession lines, and the match began around 9:30 p.m. By 9:45 p.m., one bar had almost run out of melon balls for their popular cocktail.
