The Los Angeles Rams faced off against the San Francisco 49ers in an international Week 1 match held in Australia. The Rams arrived just 24 hours before kickoff, whereas the 49ers reached Melbourne a week in advance to adjust to the significant time difference.
San Francisco displayed a markedly sharper performance than their rivals, securing a decisive 27-7 victory. The contrast was especially stark as Los Angeles failed to replicate the strong offensive play that led them in the 2025 NFL season. Matthew Stafford, last year’s league MVP, alongside the Rams, struggled throughout the game.
The decision by the Rams regarding their travel schedule faced heavy scrutiny from the NFL community prior to Thursday’s game. The outcome only intensified this criticism. Commentator Stephen A. Smith highlighted the error, expressing on ESPN’s “First Take” that the timing of their arrival was “clearly” a blunder.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy concluded the game with 205 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His scoring passes connected with Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson. Matthew Stafford ended the game with 155 yards and an interception, falling short of expectations.
Looking forward, the Rams aim to recover in their upcoming Week 2 game against the New York Giants scheduled for next Monday.
