Ray Jarvis: Remembering a Talented NFL Receiver

Ray Jarvis, a former wide receiver for Norfolk State and a nine-season NFL player, passed away on August 3 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, at the age of 77.

College Achievements

Born on February 2, 1949, in Chesapeake, Virginia, Jarvis made his mark at Norfolk State from 1967 to 1970. During his college career, Jarvis became one of the most notable receivers in the school’s history, helping establish Norfolk State as a strong program among Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He ended his collegiate years with 2,211 receiving yards, a figure that still ranks fourth in school history. His record of 30.8 yards per reception in the 1970 season remains unbroken at Norfolk State.

NFL Journey

The Atlanta Falcons picked Jarvis in the fifth round of the 1971 NFL Draft, selecting him as the 111th overall pick. After playing six games over two seasons with the Falcons, Jarvis joined the Buffalo Bills, where he played 12 games in 1973. However, his success came after moving to the Detroit Lions in 1974, where he played until 1978. During his time with the Lions, he led the team in receiving in 1975 and 1976. In 1976, he was named the offensive MVP of the Lions. He registered 26.1 yards per catch, leading the NFC. Jarvis concluded his NFL career with the New England Patriots in 1979. He retired with 104 catches, 1,832 yards, and 11 touchdowns.

Legacy and Challenges

In 2023, Norfolk State honored Jarvis by inducting him into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame, recognizing his college records and his professional career. Despite his achievements, Jarvis faced challenges in retirement. He was one of many former players whose family sought compensation through the NFL concussion settlement, drawing attention to the hurdles faced by retirees.

“He had been in hospice since last year due to Alzheimer’s and dementia,” shared his wife, Ahdea.

Ray Jarvis is survived by his wife Ahdea, daughters Rahdea and Shani, and five siblings.
