Rays to Face Brewers in Historic World Series Matchup
An exuberant crowd of 40,230 filled Tropicana Field on Monday, October 19, to witness the Tampa Bay Rays secure their first American League pennant since 2020. Fans left the venue with smiles, as the Rays triumphed over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, winning 7-3. Their next challenge: a historic World Series face-off with the Milwaukee Brewers, commencing this Friday at American Family Field.
This marks the inaugural meeting between Tampa Bay and Milwaukee in the World Series, ensuring that one of these franchises will achieve their first-ever championship title.
The Rays maintained control throughout Game 6, never allowing the Guardians to lead. Freddy Peralta, the starting pitcher for Tampa Bay, impressed by giving up just one run over 5.1 innings. The Guardians tried a bullpen strategy to push the series to Game 7, but found themselves down 3-0 after the third inning.
Cleveland managed to close the gap, narrowing the score to 3-1 and 5-3. However, Yandy Diaz delivered a clutch two-run home run in the eighth inning against Guardians pitcher Hunter Gaddis. This hit secured a comfortable lead for the Rays and earned Diaz a loud ovation from the fans at Tropicana Field.

The Rays had previously lost the 2008 World Series to the Philadelphia Phillies and the 2020 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Only two players from the 2020 World Series team, Yandy Diaz and injured pitcher Shane McClanahan, remain part of the roster today. Despite starting the season with the fifth-smallest payroll in the MLB, the Rays concluded the regular season with the best record in the American League, earning them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Rays manager Kevin Cash reflected on this season’s journey before Game 6. “I thought this team really came together about as well as you could in the Spring Training setting, given the roster turnover that took place,” Cash stated. “There were a lot of new faces, and you could sense it was a pretty close-knit group.”
He continued, “Any challenges along the way were handled incredibly well. Coming out of the All-Star break, getting swept by Boston did not derail this group at all. You’re looking at a divisional opponent that’s getting hot, and they were as hot as any team in baseball. And we got beat. We weren’t beating ourselves. We got beat. But that didn’t change the mindset. There was no panic. They just stayed at it.”
