Mychal Threets, the host of the “Reading Rainbow” reboot, is focusing on his mental health. He announced earlier this week on Threads that he would check himself into the hospital for treatment. Threets expressed his struggles saying, “I am not okay. I’m seeking help,” and assured his followers, “In this moment I am safe.”
He extended gratitude to those who care for him, mentioning the extraordinary people in his life. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown responded, encouraging him to seek help sooner, “If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.” Another user emphasized the impact Threets has, writing, “This world is a better place because you’re in it.” Many expressed love and support, urging him to continue his journey.
Threets has openly discussed his mental health challenges. He gained popularity in 2023 for his uplifting messages on TikTok and Instagram, which helped him amass a large following. However, in 2024, he left his librarian job in California as he struggled with mental health and felt burnt out, even contemplating suicide.
In 2025, Threets became the host of “Reading Rainbow,” succeeding LeVar Burton. The original series aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006.
