Loggerhead sea turtles have shown a remarkable resurgence, laying 4,174 nests on Georgia’s beaches this year, marking the highest count in several decades. This increase highlights a slow but steady recovery for the species, which remains threatened.
Kris Williams Carroll, the director of the Caretta Research Project, was seen holding three loggerhead hatchlings on July 18, 2026, after discovering them in a nest on Wassaw Island, Georgia. The event underscores the ongoing efforts to protect and study these turtles.
On Tybee Island, the nesting season has been particularly noteworthy. Sarah Alley, a biologist and curator at the nonprofit Tybee Island Marine Science Center, reported a record-breaking 59 nests. This figure surpasses the previous record of 35 nests. Describing the season, Alley reflected, “Exhausting, but definitely rewarding.”
This progress in loggerhead sea turtle nesting is a positive development, indicating the success of conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding their future. Continued support and protection will be crucial in maintaining and furthering these gains.
