Thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for a daylong event that combined Christian prayer with political enthusiasm. President Trump highlighted the rally as a chance to ‘rededicate America as one nation under God.’
Attendees listened to spiritual and political figures, including members of Trump’s cabinet. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth contributed a recorded message, urging the crowd to ‘pray without ceasing,’ a sentiment from the New Testament. He referenced a tale of President George Washington praying at Valley Forge during 1777-1778, which some Christians use to claim America’s founders intended the nation to reflect Christian ideals. Hegseth stated, ‘Let us pray for our nation on bended knee… so help us God,’ echoing Washington’s reputed supplication, to audience applause.
The event featured speeches and Christian music against a significant governmental backdrop, striving to reinforce the idea of a deliberately Christian founding of the nation. This narrative is challenged by many scholars, as the separation of church and state is a fundamental American democratic principle. The First Amendment restricts Congress from ‘establishing religion’ or ‘prohibiting its free exercise.’
President Trump did not attend in person, although some attendees expected his presence. Instead, he delivered a prerecorded message reading a chapter from the Old Testament’s II Chronicles. The recording appeared to be the same as one he made earlier in the Oval Office for a Texas-led Bible reading. The chosen passage is seen by many of Trump’s Christian followers as invoking national repentance followed by divine blessing.
