President Trump’s decision to delay a $14 billion arms package to Taiwan offers a significant advantage to China. This move aligns with Beijing’s agenda of weakening Taiwan’s government.
China’s state media has seized upon Trump’s stance to question the United States’ reliability as an ally to Taiwan. This message serves to reinforce Beijing’s claim over the island, which it considers its own.
The comments from the Global Times, a major Chinese newspaper, reflected this narrative. They suggested that President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan and his Democratic Progressive Party should not expect unwavering support from the U.S.
Colonel Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, commented on Monday with a warning to Taiwan. He stated, “Security cannot be bought with military purchases; if you become a pawn, you will only be squeezed dry.” This underscores China’s intention to undermine Taiwan’s security through diplomatic means.
President Trump’s remarks came after his summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. He described the arms package decision as a strategic “negotiating chip” with China. The specifics of what Trump expects from China in return remain undisclosed.
