When you arrive at Daytona International Speedway, spotting a Kyle Busch fan is easy. A prominent ‘Rowdy Forever’ banner greets you as you enter the infield. Such banners are abundant this weekend.
This event marks the first NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona since Busch’s tragic passing in May. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 will conclude the regular season tonight, a little over three months after NASCAR lost a driver often compared to Dale Earnhardt.
A Painful Loss for Fans
Kyle Busch, known for his No. 18 M&M’s Toyota, participated in the 62nd Annual Daytona 500 qualifying session on February 9, 2020, at the Daytona International Speedway. His death in May was the first major loss of an active NASCAR driver since Dale Earnhardt passed away on the last turn of the 2001 Daytona 500.
For decades, Daytona challenged Earnhardt. He could secure victories in various races but struggled with the Daytona 500. Busch won just once at Daytona in his two-decade Cup career, missing out on the coveted 500.
Busch’s Connection to Daytona
While Kyle Busch didn’t share Earnhardt’s love for Daytona, he acknowledged and respected the track. During February’s 500 race, Busch led the third lap, honoring the 25th anniversary of Earnhardt’s death. Despite leading 19 laps, he couldn’t clinch the win.
This weekend’s race marks the first time since 1978 that neither an Earnhardt nor a Busch will compete at Daytona. Bobby Allison was the Daytona 500 winner then. Dale Earnhardt debuted at Daytona later that year.
The Legacy of Buschs and Earnhardts
The presence of these racing families has been significant over the years. Kurt Busch’s first race was the 2001 Daytona 500, where Earnhardt died. Kyle Busch joined the series five years later, eventually securing 63 Cup victories and two championships.
Kyle’s list of achievements includes 234 wins across NASCAR’s three national series. He claimed victories in the Coca-Cola 600, Southern 500, and Indianapolis 500. Yet, a Daytona 500 win eluded him.
Daytona was a challenging venue for Kyle. Despite his mixed fortunes there, his influence remains strong, echoing Earnhardt’s lasting presence at the track.
