America has known Mike Ditka as a legendary figure in the world of football. He represented the NFL’s toughness and became the emblem of Chicago. His legacy extends beyond a Hall of Fame player and a head coach who guided the Bears to win the celebrated Super Bowl XX.
Mike Ditka wasn’t only about football. For almost a decade, he was my radio partner. In our show and podcast “Let’s Go!” aired on SiriusXM NFL Radio, I dedicated time to honor Coach Ditka’s life, along with co-hosts past and present such as Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, and Peter King. They shared what Ditka meant to them and to football. This is our tribute to him.
His passing on October 9 at age 86 marks the end of an era. Ditka was a unique figure, an icon that seemed indestructible. He exuded a belief that he could overcome anything and might never age. A personality like Mike Ditka is indeed rare.
“America’s Coach,” I fondly called him. He was not only a colleague but a beloved figure in my life. His passion for life was apparent. He lived it to the fullest.
Jim Gray, a 12-time Emmy Award-winning sportscaster and Fox News contributor, shared this memory. He stood alongside Ditka through several triumphs.
Ditka’s personality was complex. Tough yet tender. Generous and demanding. He had a humorous side and an explosive temper. He invoked laughter, made people feel on edge, teary-eyed, yet important—all in a single exchange.
His authenticity resonated. He wasn’t conventional or eager for widespread approval. Ditka was admired by teammates, players, colleagues, opponents, and even critics.
Known as “Iron Mike.” Ditka was both a man of character and character itself. His impact on Chicago, the NFL, and sports was vast. His presence seemed larger-than-life, always accessible to me personally.
“A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives,” reads Jackie Robinson’s tombstone. Ditka’s influence was undeniable.
During the Hollywood Walk of Fame induction, Ditka introduced me. He journeyed miles to speak heartfelt words. His support was constant.
Ditka emphasized, “If you have no critics, you have no successes.” He embraced victories regardless.
Ditka possessed it all: the mustache, cigar, volatility, winning streak, and loyalty. He was uniquely extraordinary. People familiar with him recognized his profound kindness, moments when his bluster faded. Ditka’s generosity knew no bounds.
His behind-the-scenes kindness is invaluable. Whether aiding fellow players, children in distress, seniors needing help, or families in hard times, Ditka responded with unwavering generosity without expectation of reciprocation.
His life echoed Frank Sinatra’s “My Way:”
“For what is a man? What has he got? If not himself, then he has not… The record shows I took the blows and did it my way.”
Ditka’s absence isn’t merely about what he did but his presence. His unique essence is irreplaceable.
Ralph Waldo Emerson described the vacuum left by a great man’s removal: “None comes, and none will. His class is extinguished with him.” Mike Ditka stands in a singular class. His farewell was personal, “God bless, Jimmy.” Ditka never said goodbye; he blessed.
May Coach Ditka’s soul rest in peace and his family be comforted.
