Ukraine is pressing Elon Musk’s SpaceX to lift new restrictions on its Starshield satellite service. These restrictions could affect Ukraine’s ability to intercept Russian drones and conduct military operations, according to a source familiar with the situation.
The restrictions were applied without prior notice, even though Ukraine relies on the service under a U.S. government contract valid until May 15, 2027. Ukrainian forces experienced connectivity issues and contacted SpaceX support, learning about the new limits. The Starshield service is now restricted on platforms moving at speeds over 100 miles per hour.
The restrictions raised concerns about Ukraine’s defense capabilities, especially against Russia’s upgraded Shahed attack drones.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that while connectivity for speeds below the threshold was restored, removing the speed restriction completely was essential for defense. He acknowledged Elon Musk’s support but emphasized the need for unrestricted service.
Serhii Beskrestnov, adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on defense technology, highlighted the threat these restrictions pose to Ukraine’s defense strategy. Ukrainian forces have reported operational disruptions, even when their drones traveled below 100 mph. The 7th Rapid Response Corps had to cancel missions due to connectivity issues on the Huliaipole front.
U.S. Senator Thom Tillis expressed concern, pressing SpaceX for answers about the policy change. He questioned if degrading Ukraine’s defense capabilities is part of SpaceX’s intent, which he hoped was not the case.
Starshield, SpaceX’s national security satellite service, builds upon Starlink technology. The service is vital for high-speed drones, aircraft, and helicopters engaged in Ukraine’s defense against Russian attacks. Ukrainian military units reported connectivity issues impacting their operations, even at speeds below the stated limit.
Ukraine has sought clarification and restoration of services from SpaceX, arguing that the new restrictions disrupt operations. They emphasized the U.S. government contract, which includes mobile and fixed uses. As of Wednesday morning, SpaceX had not responded to their request.
Polish Foreign Minister Radislaw Sikorski criticized Musk over these restrictions. Poland funds over 2,900 Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Sikorski had previously clashed with Musk regarding Ukraine’s dependency on Starlink.
Fox News Digital contacted the Pentagon, White House, and SpaceX for further details. Meanwhile, the Pentagon contracts with SpaceX for Starshield services but it’s unclear who controls the specific operational restrictions, like the new speed limit.
