Abigail Velez, a correspondent for ABC7 Los Angeles, engaged in lighthearted banter during a USMNT watch party in Long Beach, California. Her playful comments came on the heels of the USA’s loss to Turkey. Velez was previewing the upcoming match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, remarking, “The next round, Team USA will face Bosnia next Wednesday. One thing about Bosnia, I couldn’t point out where it is on a map.”
Velez continued her spirited commentary, expressing confidence in Team USA’s future performance. “I don’t know anything about Bosnia, and I don’t wish to learn, because Team USA, we’re back and better than ever. So Bosnia, get ready. You’re going to face it next Wednesday,” she stated.
Her comments, clearly meant as playful trash talk, were in the context of an upcoming World Cup match. However, it seemed to stir up controversy and prompted a response from the Bosnian national soccer team. Their tweet read, “My goodness, the stereotypes write themselves…” This post, featuring Velez’s comments, reached over 10 million views.
Velez issued an apology, acknowledging her on-air comments were insensitive. “In an attempt to have some fun with World Cup competition, I went too far and made a thoughtless comment. I apologize to the people of Bosnia and the Bosnian Football team,” Velez stated.
She further expressed, “The World Cup aims to unite communities worldwide, and my comment did not reflect that spirit. Wishing all teams the best in their World Cup journey.”
The incident highlights differing perceptions of humor and sportsmanship, with some seeing the necessity for apologies in professional settings.
