New Gallup Data: Democrats’ Advantage
A recent Gallup report shows Democrats leading Republicans in party identification among Americans. Data from the second quarter of 2026 reveals that 49% of Americans favor or lean towards the Democratic Party, while 39% lean towards the Republican Party. This 10-point lead mirrors the margin observed in the first quarter and represents the most significant advantage recorded by Gallup since 2015. This shift is noteworthy compared to the end of 2024, when Republicans held a slight lead over Democrats.
Shift Since Trump’s Return
Since President Donald Trump resumed office, Gallup’s data indicates an increase in Democratic support among both party members and independent leaners. Currently, 31% identify as Democrats, 25% as Republicans, and 44% as independents. The six-point gap between the main parties is the largest Democratic lead since 2015. Midterm elections often reflect the political environment surrounding the party in power, traditionally leading to the president’s party losing seats. Democrats are under favorable conditions to reclaim control of the House, although Republicans still have a chance to maintain their majority.
Impact of Midterm Elections
Other polls also show Democrats advantaged regarding measures related to the upcoming elections. Despite this, Trump plans to support Republican candidates in the final campaign days, focusing on 35 races. Party identification offers insight into the political landscape, yet does not predict voter turnout or election results. Columbia University’s Robert Y. Shapiro points to the importance of Trump’s influence on issues like inflation and affordability, which could impact voter decisions. Grant Davis Reeher from Syracuse University emphasizes the excitement generated by new socialist-oriented candidates among Democrats.
Party Control and Historical Context
Democrats lost the presidential election in 2016 despite leading in party identification. Gallup numbers matter more with Republicans holding Congress, but Democrats poised to capitalize on political trends. Success will rely on turnout, individual races, and the general environment during November’s elections. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stresses the importance of the 2024 presidential election over current approval figures, highlighting Trump’s achievements and agenda.
Polling Ahead of Elections
Democrats maintain an edge in generic congressional polls, a critical indicator impacting House control. Republican-favored district maps may limit Democratic gains. A recent YouGov/Economist poll shows 36% of adults backing Democratic congressional candidates against 31% for Republicans, with a margin of error of 3.5%. Quantus Insights reveals a potential Democratic edge at 49.7% for congressional candidates compared to 42.8% for Republicans. An Echelon Insights poll also displays a 5-point Democratic lead.
