The successful evacuation of four villagers trapped in a flooded cave for ten days has been completed by rescue workers in Laos. This achievement came a day after another villager was rescued. Unfortunately, two individuals remain missing.
Both Lao and Thai rescue teams shared updates on social media, showing images of the rescued villagers on stretchers with oxygen masks and wrapped in foil blankets. The villagers had entered the cave searching for minerals but got trapped due to flash floods, blocking their exit path. One villager managed to escape and informed authorities about the remaining seven.
The organization Rescue Volunteer for People announced on Facebook that the water level in the cave had decreased sufficiently for evacuation with the help of divers who had been providing food and water. The search continues for the two missing individuals.
A video by Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtang depicted the rescued villagers being helped out of the cave, covered in mud and collapsing in relief upon reaching safety. The reunion with their rescuers was emotional, marked by hugs and tears.
The first successful evacuation took place on Friday, taking about 30 minutes. Footage showed the villager emerging from underwater with a diver, followed by a difficult crawl through a narrow, submerged passage to reach safety.
The villagers, identified as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing, and Laen, were found alive on Wednesday. Rescue efforts involved teams from Laos and Thailand, with support from specialists from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, France, and Australia, many of whom had experience with the 2018 cave rescue in Thailand.
The focus now shifts to locating the two missing villagers. Kengkaj Bongkawong, head of the Thai rescue group Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, mentioned plans to explore deeper sections of the cave, approximately 20 to 25 meters beyond where the villagers were found. This effort faces challenges due to severe flooding in those areas.
