On August 31, 2026, the Nepal Army engaged in a significant rescue operation following devastating flooding at the Upper Trishuli hydropower project. The situation arose from a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, leading to widespread destruction. Filmmaker and drone pilot Manish Maharjan played a crucial role in the rescue efforts.
Days before the disaster, Maharjan crossed from China’s Tibet into Nepal. When the floods struck, he returned home and joined the Nepal Army’s rescue teams. His expertise in operating thermal drones became vital in locating around 900 missing workers affected by the catastrophe. These individuals were buried beneath mud and debris, with roughly 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels.
Maharjan utilized drones effectively to find people stranded on hillsides and in isolated areas, including caves. He employed innovative techniques, like broadcasting messages and music through speakers on the drones to elicit responses from those trapped. However, tunnels posed a unique challenge. Filled with mud, they lacked empty spaces for navigation. Despite extensive searches, drones found no signs of life within the tunnels.
The floods initiated by a glacier collapse were analyzed by scientists using satellite images. The incident registered a magnitude 5.2 seismic event, causing immense destruction in Nepal and Tibet. Infrastructure, including hydropower plants, roads, buildings, and bridges, suffered heavy damage.
Some trapped workers managed to call for help initially. However, ongoing communication issues and difficult access have complicated rescue operations. Specialists highlighted the importance of the first 72 hours post-disaster for successful rescues, emphasizing the need for clean water and breathable air.
At Rasuwagadhi, Maharjan conducted drone searches in the tunnels but faced challenges due to the complex structures. With bends and turns, drone operations become significantly harder. As the rescue mission continues, efforts to locate and save missing individuals remain critical.
