Mike Shirley, the Chicago White Sox amateur scouting director, has resigned amid controversy. The announcement came just before the team won 6-5 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
Shirley, who led the scouting team for seven years, faced allegations of making inappropriate racial and sexist remarks both about and in front of colleagues, according to reports by The Athletic. An anonymous tip prompted the White Sox to place Shirley on administrative leave. This was due to alleged incidents at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, a scouting event for high school players attended by various scouts and front-office staff.
The Area Code Games is a notable event for scouting directors and personnel to evaluate emerging talent,a source mentioned.
An investigation into Shirley’s conduct also explored allegations of vulgar comments regarding women. However, the White Sox have adhered to their policy of not commenting on specific personnel decisions, per MLB.com.
This was not the first time Shirley faced scrutiny. A prior internal investigation followed claims from an ex-employee about Shirley’s treatment of scouts belonging to “underrepresented groups.” The previous inquiry resulted in no disciplinary action.
Appointed as the director of amateur scouting in September 2019, Shirley previously served in various roles within the organization from 2010 to 2018. His department had been keenly focused on the MLB Draft, where the White Sox held the top pick for only the third time in franchise history. During this draft, they selected shortstop Roch Cholowsky from UCLA. Cholowsky was later sidelined for the season due to wrist issues.
