Restaurants Become Central in Los Angeles Political Debate
Challenges Facing Los Angeles Restaurants
A series of hurdles has marked the path of Los Angeles’s hospitality industry. Covid-19, Hollywood strikes, ICE activities, and wildfires have tested the resilience of local businesses in recent years.
In late 2024, Jeff Strauss, chef and owner of Oy Bar in Studio City, faced an unexpected setback. After months of dealing with city bureaucracy to expand his business, he discovered that his block had been sold to a developer for affordable housing under a fast-track program.
“Their plan to destroy this entire block of businesses moved much faster than my attempt to turn an existing retail space into a sandwich shop,” he pointed out.
Strauss supports affordable housing initiatives but felt the approach was detrimental to small businesses. He decided to open a grocery store instead of the restaurant project and now faces uncertainty about the future of his popular pub specializing in food inspired by Jewish American recipes.
Many local restaurant owners share similar concerns. The industry’s struggles have become pronounced due to the pandemic, Hollywood strikes, natural disasters, and ICE raids. With upcoming major tourism events like the World Cup and Summer Olympics, the restaurant sector’s challenges have gained attention ahead of the mayoral primary.
Political Solutions and Support
Nithya Raman, a Democratic candidate in the upcoming primary, highlights restaurant issues in her campaign strategy, positioning herself as an advocate for change.
Los Angeles County’s governance is fragmented, which complicates and delays change. However, candidates from various political positions are appealing to voters by presenting themselves as a partner rather than an obstacle for mom-and-pop restaurants, aiming to help small businesses benefit from the expected tourism growth.
