Incident in the Channel
On Tuesday, Russia’s military reacted following the UK government’s investigation into reports of a Russian warship firing a warning shot at a British-registered yacht. This occurred two days after British forces detained a sanctioned Russian oil tanker in the Channel.
According to British media, the frigate Admiral Grigorovich was involved. The Royal Navy typically shadows Russian military ships as they traverse the Channel. A patrol vessel was monitoring at the time of the alleged incident.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on Telegram that its crew had made multiple efforts to contact the yacht. Despite launching signal flares and sound signals, the yacht continued its approach.
When the distance narrowed to 150 meters, the frigate commander fired small arms as a preemptive measure. The British yacht adjusted its course afterward.
Details of the Event
The incident took place around 11:40 a.m. local time, located between the Isle of Wight and Normandy, France. The yacht and the Russian ship were approximately 500 yards apart, 20 miles south of the Isle of Wight.
A couple in their 60s was reportedly aboard the yacht, and no injuries or damage occurred. A French Defense Ministry spokesperson informed Newsweek that international waters require force to be necessary and proportional.
Ongoing UK and Russia Tensions
The UK Ministry of Defense hasn’t commented publicly yet. This event follows a pattern of increasing tensions between the UK and Russia.
Recently, the UK military boarded a Russian vessel linked to a shadow fleet, monitoring it for six hours off England’s south coast while continuing investigations. Such vessels are used by Russia to avoid sanctions related to its invasion of Ukraine and are critical in transporting oil and gas.
The shadow fleet vessel, flying a Cameroon flag, departed Russia’s Ust-Luga port before entering the Channel. Last sanctioned in July 2025, the ship changed its name and flag repeatedly.
Of the 700-strong fleet, around 500 ships linked to Moscow via shell companies have faced UK sanctions prohibiting entry to UK ports and access to financial services.
