Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., participated in a Cabinet meeting at the White House on May 27, 2026. Meanwhile, the impact of Lorne Michaels on comedy stretches over five decades, with ‘Saturday Night Live’ dominating humorous takes on current affairs since its inception in 1975. His instincts for timely mockery and talent discovery have been unrivaled. However, the tenure of Donald Trump offered daily real-world events that rival even the wittiest SNL sketches.
The eccentricity included decorating the Oval Office with golden flair akin to Louis XIV and a perplexing inability to navigate conflicts he initiated. Even a reflecting pool suffered, transforming into an unsightly algae-filled spot, with blame placed erratically on vandals. Furthermore, an unusual spectacle arose as 1.3 million military personnel queued for testosterone tests, an absurd scene akin to SNL’s satirical genius.
Yet, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. upstaged even these episodes with his surprising venture — a cooking show on HBO. The real-life Health and Human Services Secretary introduced ‘The Real Food Show’. The premiere featured Kennedy alongside chef Andrew Gruel in California, highlighting a shift from beef consumption to seafood. They prepared economical wild Alaska salmon cakes, costing less than $5 per serving using canned salmon.
Kennedy’s unfamiliarity in the kitchen was evident. Throughout the episode, he primarily observed Gruel, occasionally performing simple tasks like stirring ingredients. His culinary contributions were negligible, and explanations on food choices lacked clarity. His attempt to ‘flip the food pyramid’ went unexplained, and his comments on beef price reductions seemed disconnected from the seafood-focused narrative.
Questions arise regarding Kennedy’s priorities. His role encompasses tackling several public health issues — a spike in measles cases, a salmonella-related egg recall, Cyclospora outbreaks from lettuce, and rising COVID-19 instances. These crises demand attention, yet Kennedy diverted his focus to culinary endeavors, an arguably trivial pursuit given his official responsibilities.
Adding to the intrigue are Kennedy’s personal anecdotes, raising doubts about his suitability for culinary guidance. Past actions include retrieving roadkill bear for consumption, blending various animals, and transporting a whale head by car. Such eccentricities were highlighted by family members and critics during his nomination process.
The future of Kennedy’s cooking show remains uncertain. The segment’s reception suggests it may need rethinking. Experts, such as Ina Garten, the ‘Barefoot Contessa’, offer polished cooking expertise via established networks. The American audience can look elsewhere for culinary inspiration, leaving unconventional ventures like Kennedy’s to the past.
