The Colorado Rockies secured a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night. The game concluded with a controversial decision that left tensions high.
Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy kicked off the game with an inside-the-park home run off Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes. This momentum carried Colorado to a narrow win.
Controversy erupted in the ninth inning. Pirates batter Jake Mangum hit a ground ball to Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros. As Karros charged to meet the ball, he encountered Pittsburgh’s baserunner Billy Cook. Umpires initially called everyone safe. This call suggested a tie game.
However, following a Kansas City challenge, the umpires conferred and deemed Cook out for baserunner interference. “The runner failed to avoid the defender in the act of fielding the baseball,” explained crew chief Todd Tichenor. This decision left Pirates manager Don Kelly visibly upset.
Karros noted that Cook’s cleat touched his glove, which reinforced the interference call. Although Kelly acknowledged the contact, he questioned why it required a discussion among the umpires before the final decision.
Billy Cook expressed surprise upon seeing the replay, saying, “Just unfortunate how that played out.”
Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz delivered a home run in the first inning, marking the only point for Pittsburgh. T.J. Rumfield added to Colorado’s tally by bringing McCarthy home.
At the game’s conclusion, Colorado improved its record to 30-47, while Pittsburgh dropped to 38-39.
