Rogan O’Neil’s Return Sparks Optimism for Kaneland Football

Kaneland High School’s football team is energized by the return of senior Rogan O’Neil, who is back with enhanced readiness and vigor at his inside linebacker position. O’Neil previously sustained a shoulder injury during a Week 7 home game against Rochelle last season. “It was the second play of the game and it really just popped,” O’Neil recounted. He was initially thought to have an AC joint sprain and had to miss a game, yet managed to come back and play with a brace, enduring the pain until the season’s conclusion in the playoffs’ second round.

Later evaluations uncovered the injury was more severe than suspected. An MRI showed a torn labrum and fractured clavicle bone fragments. Displaying diligence and determination, O’Neil completed physical therapy earlier than projected. “My shoulder strength is back and better than it was before the injury,” he said with renewed confidence.

His recovery plays a notable part in positioning Kaneland at No. 6 in the Beacon-News/Courier-News preseason rankings. As a second-year captain, O’Neil stands out among five third-year defensive starters, playing an essential role in Kaneland’s consistent quest for a playoff spot. The team has made playoffs 27 out of the past 31 years.

“Rogan is a physical player and a strong kid,” shared Kaneland coach Mike Thorgesen. “He’s just a football kid. He’s a leader who loves to play the game.”

Last season, despite missing some games, O’Neil delivered an impressive performance with 78 tackles and 12 for loss. His father, Steve, also had a history as a high school linebacker and later played for Eastern Illinois until an injury ended his career. O’Neil’s aspiration to play at a higher level is acknowledged with an NCAA Division III offer from Wisconsin-Whitewater.

O’Neil’s path started in fifth grade, inspired by his father’s football legacy. After the pandemic-related cancellation of sixth-grade football, he committed to pursuing a skill position, switching from playing on the line due to his size to a linebacker role.

Kaneland’s coach Thorgesen noted O’Neil’s improvement in reading plays and his role as a defense leader alongside other seasoned players, including inside linebacker Jackson Slifka, Minnesota Duluth recruit linebacker Jackson Little, and linemen Jackson Valentini and Reiss Thompson.

With key offensive roles to fill due to recent graduations, Thorgesen expressed contentment with the team’s potential. The defensive unit aims to provide a robust start to the season to help set the pace in games.

Thorgesen remarked on expanded playoff formats: “I didn’t have a problem with the old way.”

O’Neil remains unfazed by such changes, believing Kaneland will meet their consistent goal of playoff appearances, aspiring for a conference title and a strong playoff performance.
