Royal Caribbean’s Port Change Sparks Debate Among Passengers
The decision by Royal Caribbean to cancel the Icon of the Seas stop at Costa Maya, Mexico has led to mixed reactions from its passengers. This change has prompted discussions about the value of the port itself. Initially, the ship had been slated to leave Miami on Saturday. However, a maintenance issue necessitated an overnight stay in Miami and subsequent departure on Sunday, as communicated to passengers through a Royal Caribbean notice and reported by Parade magazine.
Rather than visiting Costa Maya, the itinerary was altered to include an additional sea day. Passengers received notices stating that Sunday, September 27th, would be a sea day in place of the planned stop at Costa Maya.
Fox News Digital reached out to Royal Caribbean Group for remarks. Meanwhile, a Reddit user shared that passengers were being compensated with onboard credits ranging from $300, depending on their cabin type. Surprisingly, many users applauded the itinerary change.
“Just got this. $350 to miss the worst port of the itinerary made my day! Might go to the Supper Club with that.”
Another person commented approvingly on the credit and cancellation.
“Three hundred dollar credit, and you don’t have to go to Costa Maya? That’s a gigantic win.”
These comments prompted others to question what issues Costa Maya presented. Some travelers criticized the port for being underdeveloped.
“It’s so [run-down], half empty, and smells,” one person noted, mentioning seaweed as a problem. Another added, “It’s a bit underdeveloped and small. Nothing much to do really right around the port area.”
Conversely, others felt disappointed by the change. Some passengers had planned excursions to Chacchoben, a notable Maya archaeological site near Costa Maya, and were unhappy about missing those activities.
“My daughter is a bit bummed, as our ruins excursion there was what she was looking forward to the most.”
Another traveler shared similar disappointment.
“I’m bummed to be missing our Chacchoben ruins tour, but we’ll live.”
