Royce White’s Controversial WNBA Draft Declaration Sparks Debate

Royce White, once an NBA player, announced intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. His statement drew attention as an indicator of challenges within the nation. White discussed this on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend,” touching on topics including the debate around gender eligibility in the league.

According to White, “The WNBA is an example of us losing a lot of things in this country.” He commented on various societal issues, emphasizing the need for action and policy changes. White noted the lack of precise terminology in the WNBA as reflective of cultural challenges.

The WNBA’s current collective bargaining agreement, specifically Article XIII, Section 1(a), specifies eligibility for “women,” yet it lacks a definition of the term “woman.” Other terms, such as “transgender” and “gender identity,” are absent from the document.

White expressed surprise at the WNBA’s inability to define “woman” in its name. He believes the debate on eligibility in sports leagues is needed. He hopes to boost WNBA visibility, predicting increased ticket sales and audience engagement.

The league’s commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, addressed concerns about transgender athletes in a letter to teams. Engelbert stated that the topic is “nuanced” and promised ongoing discussions and listening sessions with league members and the Players Association.

White declared his enjoyment of this new personal stage while asserting his gender identity exploration. He stated, “I never thought that I was a woman, I always trusted the science.” White identified as a transgender woman upon reflection on personal preferences. He expressed a desire to play with fellow athletes, referring to them as “queens” in what he considers the peak of his career.
