Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed concerns at a news conference in New Delhi regarding U.S. immigration reform. Indian officials and media expressed worries that changes could restrict migration from India.
Rubio clarified, “The changes, while possibly impacting India disproportionately due to the high number of skilled workers, are not targeted at India but are applied globally.” He emphasized that the U.S. values India as a strategic ally and that reforms aim to serve national interests.
India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar raised issues about the challenges legit travelers face with U.S. visa issuance. He stressed that while both countries combat illegal migration, legal processes should remain unaffected to support business and research cooperation.
Rubio highlighted the U.S.’s welcoming nature, noting that around one million individuals become permanent residents annually. He emphasized modernization in response to over 20 million illegal entries in previous years as a catalyst for reforming the immigration system.
He acknowledged the transitional adjustments required and encouraged patience, stating, “We’re optimizing the system for the 21st century, beneficial both for America and its immigrants.” Rubio assured that the U.S. and India’s relationship would grow stronger following these adaptations.
He also addressed anti-India racism concerns, dismissing derogatory comments online as unrepresentative of U.S. society’s overall welcoming stance. Rubio praised the contributions of immigrants to American society.
