Russell Triumphs from Pole Position
George Russell secured a timely victory from pole position in Austria, closing the gap on championship leader Kimi Antonelli. This victory bolstered his chances in the title race. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, had his best race of the season, finishing second. The race featured numerous overtakes and complex strategies amid the picturesque Styrian mountains. Russell led most of the race as others fought for position.
Teammate Kimi Antonelli finished third, just two seconds behind the top three. However, it was a disappointing outing for Ferrari as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc ended in fifth and eighth place, respectively. In the opening laps, Hamilton overtook Leclerc for second while Verstappen moved up from fifth to third.
Verstappen’s Strategy Pays Off
On Lap 11, Verstappen engaged in an exciting battle with Hamilton, exchanging positions before adopting a three-stop strategy. Russell extended his lead during this time. The battle intensified on Lap 22, with Verstappen making a decisive move against Hamilton. While he aimed to overtake Russell, it proved too challenging. Russell eventually secured his second win of the season, moving to second in the drivers’ championship, trailing teammate Antonelli by 40 points.
Verstappen Overcomes Challenges
“Rewind 24 hours,” said Madeline Coleman, at the Red Bull Ring, reflecting on Verstappen’s qualifying struggles.
Verstappen nearly missed Q2 in qualifying, advancing by just 0.040 seconds. A crash in Q3, caused by car issues confirmed by team principal Laurent Mekies, left him at a disadvantage. However, the team successfully rebuilt his car, allowing him to start fifth. Red Bull introduced upgrades, including seven new parts, to address performance disparities.
Verstappen utilized strategic tire choices, opting for either medium-hard-medium or medium-hard-hard setups. This strategy proved advantageous compared to other front-runners. He faced intense battles with Hamilton, notably a decisive move on Lap 22 where he overtook Hamilton at Turn 6. Though he attempted to catch Russell, the gap was insurmountable.
Russell Holds On to Victory
Russell faced fluctuating fortunes throughout the race. After initially pulling ahead of both Leclerc and Hamilton, Verstappen emerged as his main rival. Russell gained several seconds while Hamilton and Verstappen battled, eventually sticking to a two-stop strategy. His middle stint showed poor pace compared to Verstappen and Antonelli, who recovered despite early setbacks.
In the final stint, Russell’s performance improved, maintaining his lead over Verstappen. A trip off at Turn 1 created a tense finale, but Russell retained his position, earning a significant victory in Austria. Antonelli impressively closed the gap to Verstappen in the closing stages, almost overtaking him.
Ferrari Struggles in Austria
Ferrari arrived in Spielberg with high expectations after Hamilton’s recent victory and an upgraded engine. The result, however, brought the team back to reality. Leclerc stayed close to Russell initially, but Hamilton emerged as Ferrari’s faster driver. Despite battling fiercely with Verstappen, Hamilton’s early pit stop strategy limited his effectiveness.
Hamilton ended up racing other competitors, grappling with high engine temperatures, and eventually finished in fifth place. This result wasn’t what Ferrari anticipated at a challenging track with high altitude, complicating engine cooling.
Cadillac’s Tough Weekend
Cadillac faced reliability issues, significantly impacting their performance despite introducing 10 updated components. Valtteri Bottas retired within the first two laps due to overheating brakes. Sergio Pérez shortly followed, citing smoke in the cockpit.
Cadillac encountered multiple issues over the weekend, from limited running on Friday to overheating problems. Nevertheless, they managed to qualify ahead of Aston Martin. Although the team showed promise, ongoing reliability concerns remain. The next race weekend will determine if Cadillac’s performance improves.
