Saffie Osborne achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first female jockey to win one of British Flat racing’s prestigious five Classics. She clinched this historic victory at the St Leger on Saturday, riding the 11-1 contender, Highwayman. The race, known as the world’s oldest Classic Flat race, marked its 250th anniversary this year.
Osborne outperformed rivals like Enceladus and Amelia Earhart, earning significant recognition. Speaking to the Racing Post, Osborne expressed how much the victory means to her. She credited Joseph O’Brien, Highwayman’s trainer, for his support and gratitude. “I don’t think I’ve ever been speechless in my life! I didn’t expect this at all,” Osborne remarked. She highlighted the pivotal role of her agent, Tony Hind, and acknowledged her parents’ unwavering support, describing the experience as life-changing.
Before Osborne’s breakthrough win, no female jockey had ever won any of the five British Classics, which include the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks, and Epsom Derby as well. This victory is projected to earn close to £400,000 ($541,000) in prize money, which is typically divided among the horse’s owner, trainer, jockey, and stable staff.
Osborne’s season has been noteworthy, with notable wins such as a trio of victories at Ascot on King George day in July and further successes at Glorious Goodwood. Her win at the St Leger sets her apart as a trailblazer, following Hollie Doyle’s milestone as the first woman to place in a British Classic at the Epsom Oaks in June 2022.
