Saints’ Defensive Score Overturned Due to Fumble Review
On Sunday afternoon, the New Orleans Saints experienced a brief celebration before having their defensive touchdown annulled against the Detroit Lions. With the Lions leading 7-0 early in the second quarter, Saints defensive end Chase Young outmaneuvered his opponent and caused what appeared to be a routine fumble from Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
Safety Jonas Sanker picked up the loose ball and ran it into the end zone, registering what seemed to be a straightforward scoring play for the Saints. However, officials soon reviewed the play and reversed the call. They determined that Goff had initiated his throwing motion, ruling the play an incomplete pass rather than a fumble. As explained by Mike Pereira, NFL rules analyst for Fox Sports, the intention to throw the ball forward played a decisive role in their decision.
Pereira elaborated on the broadcast, stating, “He had started his throwing motion. Throwing motion begins with bringing the ball up. Forget about the hand at this point going forward. Once motion starts and the ball comes loose, the intent to throw forward makes it an incomplete pass, regardless of the ball’s location.”
This interpretation of the rules, focusing on intent rather than the ball’s position, added complexity to the play. While it may seem confusing, the Saints’ score was nullified, and the Lions consequently punted, maintaining their 7-0 lead at halftime.
The incident involving Goff’s fumble reversal due to his forward throwing intent could become one of the season’s most notable events, especially since it occurred less than a week into the 2026 NFL schedule.
