Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Eggs Affects Nearly 100 People

Federal health officials report that a salmonella outbreak has sickened nearly 100 individuals across 17 states. The outbreak is linked to eggs that have been recalled. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that 98 people fell ill between November 21 and June 30. While no deaths have occurred, 26 people have been hospitalized.

Investigations identified shell eggs from Midwest Poultry Services as a likely source. However, this Indiana-based company is not the sole contributor to the illnesses. Previously, Midwest Poultry recalled eggs produced and distributed in Texas from June 6 to July 3. These eggs, sold under various brand names, have sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 to August 17.

Retailers like Kroger in Texas and Louisiana, along with Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi, received the recalled eggs. Federal officials confirmed that samples from Texas farms tested positive for salmonella, and some matched the strain found in sick individuals.

Consumers are advised to inspect their refrigerators for any recalled eggs and either discard them or return them to stores for a refund.

Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Most affected individuals recover within a week. However, young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems might experience severe infections, possibly requiring hospitalization.
