San Diego County Faces Backlash Over July 4th Celebration Focus
San Diego County’s officials and its Democratic-led Board of Supervisors are under scrutiny due to changes in an upcoming Fourth of July celebration. Originally intended as a tribute to the Declaration of Independence, the event now involves new sponsorship rules centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The event’s primary programming includes a tribal blessing, a land acknowledgment, and nearly two hours of segments highlighting historically underserved communities. Critics, including Bill Wells, mayor of El Cajon, argue that the focus on America’s founding appears diminished in the celebration’s plans.
Wells and others point out that, due to DEI principles as a sponsorship condition, at least one sponsor has opted out. A sponsor decided not to proceed with a $2,500 donation after refusing to align with the required DEI principles. This loss of support has impacted the event’s budget, jeopardizing plans for a stage, lighting, and sound setup.
The event, planned for a San Diego waterfront location, lacks necessary funds for complete execution. The proposed schedule includes a “Tribal Intimate blessing,” “Welcoming and Land Acknowledgment,” the Black national anthem alongside the regular anthem, and community stories from various ethnic and interest groups. The day concludes with music, food trucks, cultural presentations, fireworks, and cleanup.
Jim Desmond, a Republican County Supervisor, noted his original agenda was to celebrate the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary. He referenced the area’s relationship to national defense and civic institutions. However, the Democratic majority on the board amended the event’s focus, incorporating broader community engagement with tribal, immigrant, LGBT, and other underrepresented groups.
Conservatives have criticized the schedule, suggesting it aligns more with a Democratic Socialist agenda than a traditional Independence Day celebration. Critics have expressed concern that Independence Day’s patriotic elements are overshadowed by focus on grievances, using public funds.
The County’s requirement for sponsors and donors to commit to DEI principles has caused dissatisfaction. Anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck argued that the focus seems to exclude certain community members, describing it as inappropriate.
Despite attempts to reach San Diego County and its Parks and Recreation Department for comments, they have not responded. Alec Schemmel, a Politics Reporter from Fox News Digital, reported the story.
