TUCSON, Ariz. — On Tuesday, Savannah Guthrie, host of the “Today” show, made a heartfelt plea for assistance in locating her missing mother. A day earlier, reports surfaced about a ransom note claiming her mother’s demise.
“We are in agony, and we cannot be at peace,” Guthrie expressed tearfully in New York, clutching a tissue. She emphasized their unwavering love and determination to find her mother.
Nancy Guthrie, aged 84, vanished from her Tucson-area residence on February 1. The FBI released footage showing a masked individual at her front door. Blood was found on her porch, yet the mystery endures.
Some media outlets previously reported receiving ransom notes soon after her disappearance, opting not to reveal details during the probe’s initial phase. The Guthrie family knew about these notes. Tucson’s KOLD TV stated they received two notes: one demanded Bitcoin ransom, another declared Guthrie’s passing. CNN cited law enforcement sources concerning the notes’ contents.
One note suggested that Guthrie’s kidnappers did not intend for her death, which occurred shortly post-abduction. Despite Guthrie’s refusal to discuss coverage details, she appealed to the audience to provide information, insisting someone had insights.
Questions about the ransom notes were deflected by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to the FBI, which refrained from commenting.
Tom Morrissey, a retired U.S. marshal from Arizona not associated with the case, remarked that ransom note details might be publicly disclosed if they aid suspect identification. However, sensitive details like a victim’s death are often withheld to safeguard ongoing investigations, which can evolve in unforeseen ways.
Bob Krygier, former Pima County Sheriff’s lieutenant, noted law enforcement usually waits for body discovery or prolonged disappearance before confirming death. Premature speculative statements weaken credibility.
Volunteers and search teams diligently explored the desert terrain, abundant with cactuses and boulders, after Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. A recent search near the Arizona-Mexico border yielded no results.
Guthrie and siblings periodically appeared in social media videos throughout the ordeal, urging public assistance. She requested prayers and expressed hope that her mother might rejoice in heaven alongside her father.
