Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s Resignation and LAUSD’s Future
Four months ago, Alberto Carvalho was riding high as the Superintendent of LAUSD under a new four-year contract. He was leading the country’s second-largest school district through a celebrated post-pandemic transformation. This momentum shifted dramatically when the FBI raided his home and office, leading to him being placed on paid leave. On a late Sunday night, Carvalho resigned, stating the district should “remain focused on students and learning without distraction,” as per his resignation letter.
FBI Investigation and its Impact
The FBI raided Carvalho’s premises in February, part of an investigation linked to his interactions with a contractor. The contractor was involved in a failed AI chatbot venture for the district. Despite Carvalho’s resignation, he faced no charges.
Carvalho’s term was noted for significant academic improvements. Governor Gavin Newsom commended his leadership in January, highlighting LAUSD’s progress. Carvalho stated in his resignation that low-income, disabled, foster, Black, and Latino students had exceeded pre-pandemic performance, showcasing district-wide dedication.
Unexpected Challenges
His tenure was not without challenges. Natural disasters, such as the Eaton and Palisades fires, disrupted the district. Additionally, undocumented families faced fears of immigration crackdowns on school grounds. Carvalho and district officials worked to protect these students.
The AI Chatbot Fiasco
Federal raids targeted Carvalho and Debra Kerr, an educational sales consultant linked to AllHere, an AI company. In 2024, Carvalho launched AllHere’s AI chatbot “Ed,” meant to aid families in education. The venture was short-lived due to the company’s collapse after its founder faced fraud charges, resulting in a financial cost of $3 million.
Leadership Transition at LAUSD
Post-FBI raid, the Board of Education placed Carvalho on leave and appointed Andres Chait as acting superintendent. Chait, who managed labor challenges and averted a strike from school unions, will continue in this role until a permanent decision is made.
Despite continuing on paid leave, as the district struggled with budget stress, Carvalho was a subject of criticism. However, he maintained his innocence and his intention to return to his role.
Following Carvalho’s departure, the Board of Education promised to ensure stability. The district will set new goals as it moves on from Carvalho’s leadership.
