School District U-46’s ‘Moving the U’ Relocation Project
School District U-46 officials are overseeing a major project called “Moving the U.” The focus is on transitioning sixth grade to middle schools, a part of a larger initiative known as the Unite U-46 plan, according to Lela Majstorovic, deputy superintendent of instruction. This plan aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality classrooms by expanding preschool access, adjusting boundaries, retiring old buildings, renovating schools, and constructing new campuses.
A mover was seen relocating boxes at Hanover Countryside Elementary School in Streamwood as part of the effort to move sixth-grade classes into middle schools. Majstorovic explained that this effort is meant to align facilities, programs, and resources with student needs across the district, ensuring modern learning environments and educational opportunities are available close to home.
Project contractor Bruce Phelps reported that the project would cost over $426,000 and involve 220 workers, including 113 movers. The goal is to relocate equipment, furniture, and other items by June 18, in preparation for the 2026-27 school year. Phelps noted that the sixth-grade curriculum being replaced would be retired, while other materials would be redistributed or retired as necessary.
The project involves 933 individual moves, encompassing 25,000 boxes and approximately 75,000 pieces of furniture or equipment. These will be moved across 47 school buildings within 11 communities, spanning 90 miles, including Elgin, South Elgin, Bartlett, Hanover Park, and Streamwood.
Phelps outlined the planning stages. First, staff created a master move document outlining internal and inter-school moves of classrooms, equipment, and curriculum. Next came instructions on packing and labeling, followed by a bidding process to contract movers for the classroom relocations. Meetings with vendors ensured necessary clearances for work on district property.
Although classes begin on August 27, the aim is to complete the moves early. This will allow time for necessary preparations, including building maintenance, before the school year starts.
