Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton showed little patience for inaccurate sports TV analysis, especially from former NFL players. Recently, former offensive lineman and TV analyst Geoff Schwartz mischaracterized Bo Nix on national television, prompting Payton to respond.
In a discussion on “First Things First,” Schwartz argued that Nix remained the same quarterback as in college. He suggested that Nix, although consistent, rarely pushed the ball downfield.
“I do think he just is what he is at this point. He looks like the same quarterback he was in college… He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often,” Schwartz said.
This comment was swiftly corrected by a Community Note highlighting that Nix had thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL since 2024, tallying 19 touchdowns, including postseason performances.
Payton addressed Schwartz’s take via social media, expressing skepticism about the effort behind Schwartz’s assessment.
“Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn’t,” Payton quipped, pointing out the disconnect between Schwartz’s comments and Nix’s statistical performance.
Payton emphasized that former players are expected to offer insights beyond basic debate-show narratives, making Schwartz’s misjudgment noteworthy. Nix’s deep pass success is a known fact, directly challenging Schwartz’s argument.
While discussions around Nix’s growth and potential limitations as a passer are valid, suggesting he seldom attacks downfield does not align with the statistics.
Schwartz’s take fell short of the mark.
