Security Detains Fan Waving Palestinian Flag During Yankees-Mets Game
On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a fan holding a Palestinian flag interrupted a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. The incident happened during a match between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
This occurrence took place at 9:11 p.m. as the fan ran onto the field from the left-field seats, heading toward center field. The fan managed to avoid capture for a few moments before stadium security detained him on the outfield grass.
After being escorted beyond the center-field wall, the individual encountered displeasure from fans situated above the Mets’ bullpen. They expressed their disapproval by throwing beer cans and chanting “USA” as he was led out of the stadium.
The Yankees chose not to comment on the incident. Video footage captured and shared online featured the security team tackling the fan while attendees threw cans from above.
The interruption delayed the game momentarily during a critical point in the seventh inning. With the Yankees ahead 5-2, Francisco Lindor of the Mets stood at bat, facing a 3-2 count with the bases loaded. Yankees’ pitcher Headrick used the downtime to warm up with a few pitches. Upon resuming the game, he delivered the decisive pitch resulting in a line drive out.
Before the match, the Yankees hosted a ceremony to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks. The event included appearances by several former team members, including Derek Jeter.
The background context relates to ongoing tensions stemming from a major event on October 7, 2023. This event involved an assault on southern Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas, leading to approximately 1,200 deaths. More than 70,000 Palestinians have reportedly died in the conflict according to Gaza’s health ministry, with continued violence resulting in additional casualties.
