Security Strategies Used to Protect President Trump During NATO Summit
Reports have emerged about President Donald Trump’s strategic switch to a military jet during the NATO summit in Turkey. This decision aimed to shield Trump from a credible threat posed by Iran. Meanwhile, White House staff, Secret Service agents, military personnel, and journalists remained on a decoy aircraft.
The White House did not respond to inquiries about the risks faced by individuals aboard the decoy plane, which may have included Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It remains unclear what protective measures were in place for them.
Air Force One refers to the call sign used when the U.S. president is on board, rather than a specific aircraft. According to The Washington Post, Trump secretly switched to a military jet after being seen boarding an older Air Force One in Turkey. This decoy jet proceeded to the United Kingdom with journalists and White House staff, after which Trump rejoined the group to return home.
The Wall Street Journal reported Israeli intelligence alerted the Trump administration to a threat involving shoulder-fired missiles targeting Air Force One.
Former Secret Service agent Bill Gage indicated those aboard the older aircraft might have experienced elevated risk. He described the operation as a calculated move to address the threat.
Gage mentioned, “Any travel with [the president] should be considered a risk,” implying a calculated decision was made not to inform those on the decoy aircraft.
The alleged threat targeted what was believed to be carrying Trump, not the older jet. This left passengers as potential collateral in an attack, with no public information on any added protective measures.
Reporters traveling from Turkey to the UK on the older plane were asked to close window shades during takeoff. When questioned about the request, Trump commented on potential dangers, suggesting reporters deal with these due to threats against him.
Gage noted that the secretive nature of the operation likely meant very few were informed beforehand, indicating serious intelligence actioned the switch.
Former senior Secret Service official Robert “Bobby” McDonald explained that deceptive presidential movements, sometimes known as “shell games,” are rare but part of protocols when credible threats arise. He believed the planes were likely monitored by the Air Force.
Previous instances have seen similar tactics, like during President Bill Clinton’s 2000 visit to Pakistan, where a decoy preceded his unmarked plane. However, the reported operation in Turkey involved a larger press presence swearing to secrecy compared to past secret trips.
CNN’s Jake Tapper, who traveled with President Obama on a secret Afghanistan trip, acknowledged past White House deceptions for protection. Yet, he mentioned he had not heard of using a plane full of staff and journalists as a decoy during an imminent threat before.
Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer defended the deception on social media as necessary under credible threat scenarios. He stated that if the threat was real, the Secret Service’s duty is to protect the president, even if deception upset the press.
