Senator Thom Tillis, concluding his tenure in the Senate, has expressed strong criticism towards President Trump’s advisers, labeling them as ‘sycophants.’ He urges his fellow lawmakers to assert Senate’s role as a co-equal branch of government. Tillis voices his concern over the increasing influence of the executive branch on the checks and balances of the nation.
The senior senator from North Carolina highlights what he perceives as ‘WTF moments’ in the Trump administration in his book How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents. Tillis fears the erosion of democracy, advocating for the role of Congress to remain vigilant and equal to the executive branch.
Recent administrations, according to Tillis, have favored governing through executive orders. He stresses that Congress must act as an equal partner to the presidency, regardless of which party holds power. Referring to this dynamic, he emphasizes past mistakes of handing excessive power to the presidency and warns of its repercussions.
Tillis discusses the potential risks of authoritarianism, citing four administrations where presidents have bypassed congressional authority. He stresses the importance of maintaining the three branches of government as separate but balanced entities.
Tillis stated, “I want checks and balances. I want all three branches to have their individual role and continue to check power as they have for 250 years.”
Having joined the Senate before Trump’s rise, Tillis maintains his conservative stance on Second Amendment rights and limited government. He notes his difference from other conservatives lies in a comprehensive list of ratified accomplishments.
After defying President Trump on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Tillis decided to retire instead of seeking re-election. Trump criticized Tillis as a talker rather than a doer and threatened to rally support for a primary challenger against him.
Tillis, reflecting on his relation with Trump, acknowledges respect for the president despite their contentious interactions. His upcoming book includes private texts with Trump that reveal the reasons behind his retirement decision.
Tillis pushed for the dismissal of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, expressing regret over confirming him alongside Trump’s other Cabinet nominees. Tillis reflects on mistakes made during the initial stages of the current administration regarding Iran.
During a Senate hearing, Tillis criticized Homeland Security Advisor Kristi Noem regarding her handling of deaths in Minneapolis, leading to Noem’s removal by Trump. Tillis targeted other figures in Trump’s administration, such as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Tillis, dissatisfied with the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, did not support Trump’s conviction post-presidency. He views the impeachment as politicized, aimed at undermining future candidacy.
Tillis predicts Republican challenges in the upcoming midterms, underscoring affordability issues and reluctance among Senate colleagues to confront the Trump administration. He reveals that several senators privately express unease over Trump’s actions but refrain from public criticism fearing electoral retaliation.
“They don’t want to bear the weight of the president,” Tillis remarked. “You’re up for reelection? He’ll target you in a primary.”
