Senate Committee Advances Schwartz’s Nomination for CDC Director Amid Concerns
A Senate committee has moved forward with Dr. Erica Schwartz’s nomination to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), despite worries about her potential resistance to political influence. If approved by the full Senate, Schwartz, 54, will become the 22nd director of the CDC, headquartered in Atlanta. Her professional background includes medical and law degrees, serving as deputy surgeon general, and a leadership role in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Doubts about her nomination arose after a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing, where questions focused on her ability to stand up to President Trump’s health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Concerns centered on whether she would uphold scientific integrity if political orders conflicted with public health practices. The committee’s chairman, Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, initially skeptical, later expressed confidence in Schwartz’s capabilities after further discussions.
The committee supported Schwartz’s nomination mostly along party lines, although opposition existed. Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders questioned the administration’s commitment to scientific integrity, especially amid political appointments without significant health expertise. The CDC, struggling with staff cuts and leadership changes under Trump, faces urgent challenges. Public health experts maintain cautious optimism due to Schwartz’s credentials, despite concerns about her ties to politicians.
Schwartz’s hearing raised issues about the agency’s previous management. She failed to acknowledge reductions in key public health programs and dodged commitments to alter a controversial CDC webpage linking vaccines to autism, which contradicts scientific consensus. Dr. Georges Benjamin from the American Public Health Association and Dr. Daniel Jernigan, a former CDC official, noted the need for stable leadership to restore efficacy and trust.
Swartz would be the third Trump nominee for this position in a year and a half, following the withdrawal of Dr. David Weldon and the brief tenure of Susan Monarez. Her confirmation is pivotal in addressing numerous vacancies in federal health leadership, including the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, and the surgeon general.
Separately, the Senate committee sided with Trump’s choice of Sean Kaufman as assistant health secretary for preparedness and response. Despite controversial views opposing certain vaccinations and supporting vaccine skeptics, assurances were provided that Kaufman would not influence vaccine policy. Cassidy voiced concerns over Kaufman’s past statements, but Senate backing emerged amid assurances of improved oversight prioritizing scientific evidence.
